Branding Irons

How many of you use branding irons for your pot calls? If you do, do you like it and where did you get yours made?

Thanks for any advice,

Kevin Croteau

I have one but I don't use it doesn't work well on a semi rounded surface needs to be flat. It also discolors the surrounding wood if it's a light color wood. Then you have to sand some more.    :funny:

From the "surveys" i have done, guys buying custom calls prefer the hand signed look of a pigma pen. I contemplated laser engraving and branding irons but like larry said it takes a bit more effort . And for my experience at laest, after asking around guys prefer the ink look on the custom calls

i thought branding irons would be the way to go to. i bought two of them from Colwood branding irons , they were pricey but just what i asked for they really know what they are doing there. so i bought two one was big and round to go just inside of the sound holes and the other was small to be used on the bottom of box calls. and like prairie game calls said it has to be very very very flat like put a straight edge on it flat. an theres no second chance your not going to burn it and try to line it back up it rarely works. as for the discoloration if you sand to 400 then burn then lightly hand sand with 400 or 600 with the grain you can usually clean it up nice then put your finish on. ive kind of stopped using them because people do like the hand signed stuff but branding is a little fun and different every now and then . just last week i used my round brand and branded a sound board under a glass call that i was happy with. would i buy another iron probably no. :2:

Kevin I brand a lot of my calls. I will add some pics of my jig and of the logo that I use. I will also add a video I did a couple of years ago. I bought my iron from Branding Irons Unlimited. They worked to get my logo perfect before I paid a dime. Its been several years but think it was in the $200 range.

If it gets to hot they will discolor the wood as mentioned in another post. Just don't it on as long. When it does I just lightly rub with 000 or 0000 steel wood going with the grain and it will disappear.

Hope this helps.

Tony

Tony just some food for thought when I used my iron I bought one of those drill presses that you put a hand drill in and was able to fasten it to the drill press. Then I made a jig to holy my box calls and then branded them in the same place every time. It aloud for consistent pressure. Most of my customers liked the hand sigs better so I scrapped the use of the iron.
