Update on the Massey Finish
« on: January 28, 2015, 08:57:43 PM »
So I used my calls this season with the Massey Finish. They were hot they were frozen... They stayed on my lanyard and got knocked around, dropped, tossed, and stuffed in various bags and pockets. It was only one season but they held up incredibly well. The finish didn't crack or chip or really anything. I have really been happy with this finish and I encourage anyone to give it a go.

I agree with you on that finish I've used it a few times and was very happy the only thing I didn't like was the time it took between coats I guess I'm just use to CA. I use a expanding mandrel and when I put the first coat on I'd like to take it off and move it off the lathe to start another project without getting prints on it or risking dropping the piece any suggestions.

Ryan if you have a collet system look at the tutorial again I use dowel material and it stays on the dowel and I just handle it by the dowel and take it out to dry.

What ratio did you end up liking the most?  I have used this finish up until recently (mostly using oil finishes at the moment) and really like the outcome.

I ended up about 4 to 1 ratio. That's an approximation because I just eyeball it. The trick to really get this finish to pop is to make sure you sand well and make sure you fill the grain if it needs it. If you do this you can achieve a glass like finish.

Kevin, I apologize for being lazy and not looking this question back up.  If I may ask, what is the type of epoxy you used?

Thanks,

Jeff

Devcon 2 ton epoxy, slow drying not the 5 minute. You can usually find it at the hardware store.

Thanks Kevin. Been wanting to give this finish a try. Seems like it's worth it, huh?

It was originally used for a traditional bow finish, so it's tough and long lasting.

I second what Kevin said.  I used two calls with the finish through a full season and they held up well.  A good friend and my son ran two other calls through the season with good results. The ease of application is great, but it is time consuming as I use at least four coats.

Levi,

I haven't tried it on stippling so I can't say. If you try it let me know how it goes.

Against all odds, Jeremy(Swampy Creek) and I tried this finish this weekend.  Experimenting only, we tried the Gorilla 5 Minute Epoxy because that is what we had. Mixed a little epoxy and acetone in a cup and applied to two Cocobolo barrels.  The results were satisfactory. The application was so simple.  When I left the Swampy Creek shop last night, the calls were fairly dry and the finish looked great.  Although we didn't use the Devcon, it appears that any 2-part epoxy "could" work? I'll try to follow up on the Gorilla Epoxy after more coats are applied and give results here.
