pics of the event and thanks to vendors!
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:54:22 PM »
Had a great weekend.  Met a lot of new guys and we all learned a lot.  Thanks to all those who made the trip.

Also, major thanks to Al @ THO, Ron Gould, Curtis at TurnTex and Chris at Palmetto blanks for the generous donations.  We didn't hit up vendors for freebies this year, and these guys donated on their own.  We all appreciate the support of the event!

Randy, our rookie turner at the event.  Not a THO member yet but I'm betting he will be soon.  He learned of the event on facebook.  He is an accomplished woodworker and hunter but had never used a lathe.  That's his first call on my lathe.

Working on his duck call insert with Chance (KSkid).

L to R:  Lance Chapman of Reclamation Calls (Louisiana), Darren with SmackD Calls (Texas), Scott Ashburn (KC) and a fellow named Adam who called me Friday night after reading about the event to see if he could come.

Doug helping the one and only David of Mad Duck Calls build his first goose flute.  Doug's blurry because he doesn't stop moving!  He is a GREAT teacher and I love the guy's enthusiasm!

Paul Kaelin (aprilheadhunter) made it down from Iowa this year.  He missed last year but has been a fixture at previous years' events.  So has that hat.   :pot:

Jon Riggle (JRWoods) talking with Darren, Mac Dietrich (brought his wife and two girls from Kentucky), and Adam.

We eat well at this event.  Here's a bunch of the guys at Woodyard BBQ, a local KC dive that is pretty unique.  I sat on a couch to eat my lunch, in a former garage converted into extra dining space.

The smoker is on the front patio of the old house that they turned into a restaurant.  The living room is the main dining room.  '

We also ate BBQ for dinner but I was so busy eating I forgot to take pics.

Then there was this wonderful mess.  Lance from Lousiana brought a huge amount of boudin sausage as well as some deer/pork sausage.  It was my first time eating boudin and it will not be my last.  It was a huge pile of meat and by the time I remembered to take a pic of it the stuff was pretty much gone.  Darren from Texas also brought a bunch of it, and we didn't get around to cooking it.  So it is mine.   :devil2:

He also brought a couple king cakes.  Good Lord they were delicious.  So delicious, in fact, that I ate about half of the apple one single-handedly between BBQ meals Saturday.

You guys are some lucky dogs. Safe travels to everyone heading home today and tomorrow.

While I hoped to turn wood this weekend and send dualing pics to you all, my house decided to fall apart instead, so I spent the weekend with fixer upper projects.  Thankfully I was around to deal with the issues.

Junior Junior should be set to have his surgery in the morning and we will be 'free to move about our bitnez' again.

My gut still hurts from not being there. That is apparently from my stomach's lack of bbq, goose, and sausages. :)

Glen Pilger is a fellow from Ozark, MO that I have helped learn to build turkey calls over the last few months.  He isn't much of an internet user I don't think, so he's not on THO but he raved about the group and all he learned this weekend.

Lance working on a call that he later gave to me.  My first speck call and it is awesome.  He's not been making calls all that long but you can't tell.  Flawless workmanship and great sound!

Chance brought his friend Bo from Arkansas, who builds some really cool wooden turtle shell calls.

For those of you that haven't heard of Joe Bucher, get ready for this.  He lives about half an hour south of me, although we had never met until this weekend.  I invited him and he came up.  He had an absolute blast and was really excited to be in a room with so many like-minded people that are so enthusiastic about calls.  His duck calls are beyond amazing.  They are absolute works of art.  The pictures cannot do them justice, and holding them in your hand is terrifying and humbling.  I will be spending some time in his shop in the near future and I think it will be inspirational.

Hopefully some of the other guys got pics of the trade calls and other stuff that they can post!

Next year I'm thinking we'll push the turnathon back a couple months in an effort to make it more accessible to guys who are still chasing waterfowl in January.  Still a long way out, but perhaps March.

The feel of Mr Bucher's call there reminds me of Thomas Hart Benton's history mural at the Missouri State Capital.  No doubt over the top!!!

Mac left his chuck key.  Being the good friends we are, we texted him a non-edited version of this picture to let him know.
