I tried to make a squirrel call.....
« on: January 08, 2015, 08:21:58 PM »
I went out to the shop and tried to make a squirrel call, and failed....  :stickman1:   :1eye:

The tolerance on the part that holds the bellows on must be pretty tight, as the first time I shook the call for a test, the bellows flew across the room... LOL!

I do have one of Vince's calls from the turn-a-thon, and my attempt is pretty darn close to it, but must be a little on the small side.  I now have this pretty little call blank of tiger maple that's ready to rock, and nowhere to go..
Maybe duct tape....

Any tips on getting those bellows to stay put?
Thanks!
Doug

Are they the large or small bellows? With the large, I haven't found ANY way to keep them on without using goop (or jb weld if that's what you have) The small ones will stay on but I still glue them on, just to be sure.

We need pics!!!  :hammer:  :punk:

Large bellows, they sound like looney tunes when you get going on them...  :punk:

Goop huh, LOL!
I just got back in from giving it another try, and the bellows still fly across the room.  I got it on nice and tight, but was a little discouraged when it came apart...
Well, I will make a couple more, and you guys can teach me about blading squirrel reeds at the turn-a-thon next weekend.  I'm pumped up!

I have made many a hose camp with baling wire, I bet a good wrap with baling wire and a few twists with a pair of pliers would tighten it up.

Some of the 'big companies' put a little black zip tie on it.

if you wanted to save the call you made, could you use the same concept as with the grunt tube tenons, with the spider wire and CA? and build it back up and then cut it back down to desired size? never done this before just a wild shot...

if you think your hard on them wait until your customers start grabbing them!  :hysterical:  there is something about a squirrel call that entices people to , shake it, pull it, smash it, bend it, and just about anything else to see if they can  get that bellow to come off!  :hunter1:

Perhaps, do not use the bellows and make an all wood squirrel call

I always cut the tenon in a dovetail shape, and make it oversize.  Then cut a groove in the dovetail.  This groove is for the "flange" inside the bellow, to sit in.  The flange is about 1/2" inside the mouth of the rubber bellow.  And is roughly 1/8" wide.  Make sure the width of your dovetailed tenon is plenty wide.  You need to have to really stretch it over the end of the dovetail. Keep the narrow end of the dovetail a little wider (or the same size) as the mouth of the bellow.  I've never had one come off.
I suppose you could also use some Goop in the groove for added security?
I've seen other call makers use black plastic wire ties.  I don't think they are necessary if done my way.

hey Doug i hope this helps a little these are my measurements that work for me. its a bugger to get it on but once its on i slide a tooth pick between the call and bellow and put a drop of CA in a couple spots for good measure.

I increased the size of the tenon, and put a slight dovetail shape to it.  Works good!
Thanks again!
