CA finish problem on a Pen
« on: December 22, 2014, 09:15:36 AM »
Guys, I don't make a lot of pens.  A friend gave me a ton of wood for 6 pens.  I finished the first one and noticed a problem with the ca finish.  When i put the finish on some of the CA got on the bushings as well, so when the blanks came of the mandrel there was a little breaking of the CA.  this was not to bad as it was not on the wood portion.  However, when i pressed all the parts together there is a definite  discoloration and a small crack in the CA.  Any body got a suggestion for me?  I would be most appreciative.  thanks in advance:

i make a lot of pens and the simplesest way to do it . is after you turn and sand before you start your CA finish take the bushings off and they make CA bushings they look like little cones that are made of nylon . one on each side of your pen pieces leave you plenty of room for the CA. after your done with the CA application i take the pen pieces off and re ream them to square up the ends then place them back on with the nylon bushing for final wet sanding. the CA cones are sold through Penn state industries. the cones i think were about 6 dollars for a pack.

You need the little plastic cones. That will help with application. You can get them at woodcraft.

If you have some Delrin you can make your own CA bushings.

Just dip your bushings in paste wax... the CA won't adhere.

I made my own bushings out of scrap acrylic long before PSI started selling them. Guess I should have patented it.

This is what I came up with. I'm sure it will work but didn't have time to try it tonight.
