Alil help
« on: November 18, 2014, 02:07:43 AM »
I've not been on here much in a while , between work, kids and getting ready for duck season. I was asked by a friend if I could build him a Key hole cutdown like the old PS OLT's . Im sure I can build the call to look like an Olt  but how would you go about cutting a Key way inside the insert ? I've looked at Mortising Bits and Broching tools but not sure if either would work and was wondering if any one else on here had tried to cut Key holes before and how it worked out for them or if anybody has any ideas on the subject?  Thanks Chris

I've never tried it, but they have a pack of very small files at harbor freight that might help you out. That set comes with a very small rat tail file if I recall, and it is pretty cheap.

that would be a lot of filing . in my opinion i would use a 1/4" mortison bit all the way to the end of your tone channel , then do another one right below that one so you have a rectangle then cut a strip of wood to put in the rectangle hole then drill a round hole right in the center a little ways in. sounds like it would work in theory

This is what he end of the call looks like.  Drill your hole and file away at it.  If you want to do it like I think PS Olt made the insert, split the insert after drilling and mill the flat spots both halves, then glue the insert back together.

I was thinking drill a 1/4 tone channel then a Mortising bit alil offset to the cork notch, then drill out he big hole to size, and maybe take a small end mill and mill out from the cork notch to the end of the tone channel. But not sure how it will work until I try it, Was hoping some one else had tried it but guess I'll try it an repost how it works out or how many inserts I mess up lol.

Key way broach

STUMP

Yep, that's the way I did it too. It really doesn't seem to make much difference in the call, but it matches what they did.

I've talked to a couple of old call makers and guys that use to cutdown the old OLT's and they all told me the Key way didn't have anything to do with sound, But this is a very dear friend and I'm going to keep trying till I get it figured out for him.
