Reelsfoot ID help and missing parts
« on: December 20, 2014, 06:03:25 PM »
I had a customer come pick up some calls today and he brought a reelsfoot for me to fix up for him. Missing the metal reed and wedge. Also trying to figure out the maker. He says he picked up the call 20 plus years ago from a local call maker while he was hunting reelsfoot lake. He says the guy was atleast in his 70s back then. There's some writing on the barrel but it's not readable. If anyone can help me with reed and wedge I'd pay you.
Barrel - 4.750
Insert - 4.000

The configuration is pure Reelfoot. There were not many active makers 20 years ago. Glynn Scobey was the best known and it is not one off his calls.  It might be a Cochran.

The new wedge will have to be fitted to the insert in order for the insert/wedge to  fit the barrel

Thanks Fred, all he could remember was going to the guys house and having just small shop in his garage.

I will talk to the owner and if he doesn't care would you be interested in me sending you the call and you making a reed and wedge to fit it? I will pay you for it or do you have pointers on the steps I need to take to fix it

Thanks
Levi

I pulled out my copy of The Legacy of the American Duck Call, by Howard Harlan and James Fleming, to see if I could find any leads for you.  I started with Fred's thought of John Cochran and thought he was right until I found the page on John Asbille.  I'm pretty sure that is what you have.  I highly recommend the book.

You may be correct Henry.  The call is not quite as tapered as the Cochrans I have seen and Asbille was active at that time period.
After looking at Harlan's book you nailed it Henry.  The burnished ring between the end of the barrel and the lanyard grove is identical to the calls pictured.  Interesting that John Cochran is the other person in the picture.

Levi - found this link last night to a post about John's death early this year.  It references some other books with pics of his calls that might be useful to you.
