Easy Wood Tools 1/8" carbide parting tool?
« on: October 24, 2014, 12:56:29 PM »
Anyone use one of these yet?  Expensive buggers at $120, but it is the final tool I need to have my calls being worked on by 100 percent carbide.  I really enjoy using carbide tools for both quick removal, and smooth work.  I have at times bought 2 or 3 carbide tools for $120, but I suppose I will want one of these pretty soon.

I want it for both o-ring and lanyard grooves.  I currently use a 1/8" HSS tool from Penn State.  I have a Robert Sorby 1/8" thick HSS parting tool too, but I just don't like the feel of it for some reason.

I saw one place where this Easy Wood tool has 4 reviews with all 5 stars.

Ask yourself this question "Do I use a parting tool enough to pay $120 for it " I sure don't . I can sharpen a hhs parting tool an awful lot of times for that amount of money..

My thoughts exactly. It does sound like it would be nice though, maybe you should get it and do a review for us. ;D

I have no reason for buying one, too expensive considering the amount of use it would get.  But if you want a review, look on Sawmill Creek, someone was "preaching" the merits of it in the last week or so.  They also had another link to another review.   Take the reviews and read them with a grain or 2 of salt, some of the professionals speak highly of anything that they get to "test".

I feel like I do use one a lot. And I do really like grabbing a carbide tool knowing it is sharp.

I really like the precise sharp edges I can cut with the front and side of my square carbide.

I will look up that review Marvin. Thank you.

For what it's worth, Vince, carbide cannot obtain as fine an edge as HSS. For parting and strictly tenon-type work, it takes a whole lot of use to wear that HSS edge down. That being said, there's no chance I would ever buy one but your money is your money. It's hard for me to imagine buying a tool with such a limited range of capabilities for such an exorbitant price. If I just "had to have one," I'd buy an insert, make the tool from square steel stock, and save myself about $80.

Take this into consideration.  Think of the many ways you can make your own parting tool using carbide or not.
If you can turn a turning tool handle and have a drill press you can make one easily from a flat file or a carbide tipped tile cutter.  If you can work with steel how about simply using a tooth from a circular saw blade?  I spend a lot of money on tools and set-up equipment, etc.  But, even I would think twice about spending $120 for a parting tool.  I did see this one advertised, like it, nice, but to me its over priced.

I appreciate everyone's detailed thoughts!

Joe, my biggest hurdle in sharpening my lathe tools is I do not have a fancy setup to get them overly sharp. I use a slow speed water wheel. It works good, but after handling tools on Aaron's fancy sharpener, I know what I have considered sharp in the past is not even close to what the right sharpener can do.

The little carbide insert seems odd in shape for its attachment to the Easy Wood tool. I don't think it would be very easy to fashion your own tool to fit the insert.

Thanks for the saw tooth idea Joe. I will fiddle with that a little!

Just took a look at it... Joe's got it, that's straight off of a saw blade. They seem to have outsourced just the small brazed carbide tips. If you've got an angle grinder (or a plasma cutter, ideally), a saw blade, and some free time, you could make 24 or more (depending on the blade) of them for nothing.

Like call making and using the lathe, one needs to take the time to learn tool sharpening as well.  I do not have any fancy sharpening set-up, just a grinding wheel and a couple flat stones.  I often sharpen them quickly simply using different grits of wet sandpaper on a flat surface.

I consider myself a buyer of all sorts of tooling-related foolishness.  Take my grinder for instance.... :whistling:  But I can justify each and every one of those expensive purchases with speeding or easing a process I repeatedly do.  Trust me Vince, I want to find a reason to want this thing but I just can't.  Not at $120.  A lot of that has to do with the fact I don't use a parting tool for much at all, but more of it has to do with what Joe Short said.  That's just a tool that doesn't have to be razor sharp to work really well.  An HSS parting tool will hold its profile for quite a while, whereas an HSS scraping tool won't, making the EWT and similar tools really great alternatives as we all know.   :2:
