First attempt at carving
« on: October 19, 2014, 07:56:09 PM »
I'm not sure whether to thank or curse Brad Samples, but his lesson at the Waterfowl Festival at Reelfoot Lake got me twitching to try.  This was a walnut barrel that had a slight flaw by the lanyard groove, so I figured it would be a good one for #1.  It's a bit rough, but I'm pretty happy with it for my first go around.

Brad, BigB, Jason, Bear, and anyone else who carves, please offer criticism and feedback on what I need to improve.  That might start with photography lessons, I found it hard to get a good picture of this carving since the walnut was pretty dark.

Looks good, Henry! Now, go ahead and finish it up and send it on over for further inspection...

Only thing wrong I see is that there needs to be more pics!!

Looking good Henry. Go a little deeper on the next one, but that one is a great start!

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Henry, it's a great start.  Like Wes said, the more you do the more comfortable you will become.

Henry,

That looks a lot better than my first one for sure!!  Brian is correct....work on getting depth progressively with each call and that will give you more ability to play around with contours and "poses" of whatever you are carving.

As for the pics....more is better, and pick up a light booth on eBay if you don't already have one.

Good job buddy!  :gitrdone:
