One piece striker question
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:11:51 AM »
I am still trying to find a 1 - 1 1/2 inch thick piece of Kingwood for a pot call but was wondering if cocobolo can be used to make a one piece striker or is it too oily?

You got it......too oily.  Make a GREAT looking two-piece, but the oil in the wood will hurt the striker's ability to play.

Thanks Parker.  Does this pretty much cover all rosewoods Like Bolivian rosewood and Kingwood, or just cocobolo?

:surrender:  I can't personally say for what exact kinds, and not others.  I've used a wood before......CALLED rosewood (no other names associated with it) and it made a great striker.  You can get some commercial strikers that have a 'rosewood' dowel in them too.

I'm quite sure others will chime in on this Sunday evening or Monday.

I'll share a little trick with you if you reAlly want to use cocobolo. Take some of the fast set JB WELB and use it to make a tip on the striker. Use a piece of tape to make a form and put it on the tip about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. When it is set good, go back and shape it for the tip you want. It'll play even wet. When your done you want about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of JB left on the tip. Much more and it will start to seriously effect the sound. I have several customers that insist on this type tip. BUT, SHHHHHH don't tell anyone, it's a secret ::)

I make a lot of Cocobolo strikers. They work great on metal calls and slate not the best for glass calls. You can also use super glue and rain chalk on the tip if you have a problem with it slipping.

I don't know Parker, the only one piece cocobola I've heard sounded like crud.I think its better for a top piece or laminated in with a proven wood for the sound peg.

Darn, my secret is out.
Ya, I put a drop of super glue on a Post It and roll the tip of my strikers in it.
This works well, especially if there is rain in the forecast.
A super glued striker tip can work on some wet call surfaces.  I have never tried this on slates, but works on glass and ceramics.

Thanks a lot.  You guys are awesome.  I am also a taxidermist and a member of the taxidermy forum, and there is a lot more arrogance on that site.  Some of the people have a God like attitude.  It is nice to find a site that when you ask a question people actually share their experiences and little tricks to help others out and help prevent those people from making mistakes they have already discovered.  Thanks again.

Mike

Al,
Has your shipment came in yet.  Waiting to place that crow call order.

:2up:  Well of course I would!  I've STILL got to get you a very nice piece of wood from the bottom of the stack in the back shed too though.  Don't let me get too far behind.

It would be a great addition to my youth turkey hunting clinics I put on in the spring.  I'm not allowed to use my own calls by my employer, so I use other custom calls.  No need to pump the Walmart plastics.   :2up:
