1st try at carving
« on: September 22, 2014, 02:48:21 PM »
I got an order from a guy wanting a personalized deer call.  So I thought this would be a perfect time for me to try carving.  Please be honest and tell me what you think and/or what I could do better.

I think it looks great. I would probably take some kind of wood burner to it lightly so It can really pop.

I am no carving expert.  But this is how I would do it.  I would gently round the edges of the main beam of the antlers, and lower the respective tines, rounding their edges too. - Imagine the antlers sitting there, and how they would look?  That's what you are after.  You are almost there.  A few minutes with a football sanding burr, and they would really pop with the added depth!

In Microsoft Word there is a program called "Word Art". (Looks like a Blue letter "A" tilted)  It comes with every Microsoft program.  You can go in to Word Art and pick out a lettering style, in any type of font.  Type the name, or letters you want to use in the Word Art.  Ex.  You could type "Mark" in and chose an "arched" format.  This will then give you the name Mark in a curved arch.  You can then adjust the size, or curve of the arch.  Print the finished product out onto a sheet of paper.  Then use spray adhesive to attach the curved name to your call as a template.  Carve right through the paper template to produce the name precisely onto the wood.  The possibilities are endless..

As HaMer stated, you can also use Black(or any other color) Acrylic Paint Ex. Liquitex brand (Water it down slightly), to darken the background.  Dry it with a hair dryer, which makes it permanent.  I've used a small brush to carefully apply the paint around lettering, filling in the letters where necessary.
Hope this helps.

Looks great. I know I don't have the skill to carve. Wish I could.
