stack 'o pots
« on: September 01, 2014, 12:13:20 PM »
Early this summer I was asked to make turkey calls for the Missouri Dept of Conservation to give as gifts to attendees at a national conference (association of fish & wildlife agencies) they are hosting in Saint Louis later this month. I was honored and humbled to be considered for this when so many are more deserving. I somewhat overwhelmed as well, quite simply I had never undertaken anything this large and didn't know for sure where to start. They wanted all the calls out of hedge so first order was to find a large supply of hedge blanks and get started turning. My thanks go out to Mark at dbroswoods and Jon at JRwoods who both helped me acquire the blanks, again thank you both. Anyway here is what I came up with after 3 months work. There will be 1 call presented to the delegate from each state and a few extras for other folks. All are slate over glass engraving done by a local shop. Thanks for looking.

While I was working on this project I was asked if I would be interested in doing another 16 for another conference being hosted in Kansas City a week before the AFWA conference. Being a glutton for punishment I said yes. These were left to my desecration on what to make. So here is the last pile, L to R zebrawood,  walnut, apple wood, & bloodwood. Again the walnut & apple wood from dbroswoods. All slate over glass.

My thanks go to all on Tho who have shared their experience and knowledge, I have learned so much from all of you.

Wow. I've done some donations, but the scale at which you did these calls is to be commended. Very nice.

These are not donations, they are being purchased by the MDC. I want to be clear about that. I didn't mean to lead anyone to think that and apologize if I did so.

Way to go!  Those look awesome.  I bet there was a lot of sharpening going on with all that osage.

Thank you all. It's something I'm not sure I'd want to do again. All my evenings and weekends were tied up for most of the summer. But it's over now and looking back I am glad I tried it and made it though with 2 weeks to spare.  :sweatdrop:

jcz, I used a polymerized tung oil finish. The drying time was 24-48 hours per coat depending on humidity. 5 coats were applied. The strikers are all CA finish.

I've had good luck with using tung oil also. I've tried all the oils except velvet oil. I keep saying I'm going to order some just haven't done it yet.

Your finish looks great on all these.
