Wood ID via Smell?
« on: August 28, 2014, 12:09:59 PM »
Ok... so here's a strange one... I think.  I was given some wood (which basically makes it the best wood for making duck calls).  Was told it was walnut.  Looks like walnut.  But... it smells like it's been soaking in a jar of mosquito repellant.  I've turned walnut before and it didn't smell like this.  It had almost a sweet smell.  Anyone else ever get a "citronella" scent from walnut?  Or, do I possibly have something other than walnut here?  I know... pics would help but just didn't have time.

Could it be Mahogany? The stuff I turned looked somewhat like walnut, but I don't remember a "bug spray" smell?  It was when I first started turning so I may have thought it was a normal smell or something... Pictures will definitely help!

Would/ could that smell be camphor? I have some camphor wood that resembled walnut until I turned it.... It had a subdued yellow color Marbled with walnut.

Could be camphor wood, I suppose.  Guy who gave it to me said it was black walnut.  Here's a pic of the call I made from it.  To me, the finished call looks like black walnut.  The smell just makes me question it.  I Googled "camphor wood" and some of the pics of the unfinished wood look like what I've got.

Looks like Black Walnut to me.. Could it be Chechen?  I got a duck call from a guy on here (Mutt) And the insert was made of Chechen, and it looked just like that....

That's walnut.  It does have a strong smell (at least it does to me).  Wouldn't say it is like citronella though.  Perhaps it was from a barn where they wiped citronella on the horses?  When I was a kid we used to get that stuff all over the barn floor!

Looks like walnut to me, too... perhaps it had been stabilized?  Some resins have that odor.
