5/8 bore Reelfoot picture added
« on: August 22, 2014, 08:27:55 PM »
I have been wondering what all the excitement is about so I sat down this afternoon and made one.
1.--Turned the insert extension to 5/8 outside diameter.
2.--Drilled my usual tone channel and exhaust
3.-- Cut the tone board above insert center line
4.-- Cut my usual tone channel
5.--Made a new wedge to fit
6.--Trimmed my reed on each side to fit the new narrow tone board.
7.--Assembled the call
8.-- Tuned the call

Bingo!  It will do everything a regular Reelfoot will do!  Tone is a little higher and the sound volume is not quite as loud.

I will post some pictures  of the toneboard and reed tomorrow.  Too dark outside to make pictures tonight.

A standard 3/4 Reelfoot insert is on the left. The 5/8 bore insert is on the right.  The stainless reed is for the 5/8 tone board and is slightly less than 5/8 at the base.  The tip geometry and overall length is unchanged from my standard reed.  The center reed shows the amount trimmed from each side of the standard reed.   A standard reed is shown at right.
Tuning is about the same as a regular Reelfoot.  The slightly higher pitch tone results from the more narrow reed of the 5/8 bore and the tuning.  Less air required to run the call results in a slight lower volume.  Very similar to a short barrel 3/4 bore Reelfoot properly tuned.

Heck yeah!!! That's kinda what I was going for in tone and volume. I've been playing all week with the sloped tone channel, I think I've about got it where I like the sound. It does make a ton of difference than a straight bore tone channel.

You mean I've been one of the cool kids and didnt know it all along?  Made quite a few. I like 1/2 metal reeds the best. WAY louder call and WAY less air to run.
