Maple Pot Call
« on: August 16, 2014, 04:51:39 PM »
Below is a 3" slate/glass from some spalted maple I got from Dbros. that  I stabilized green. It has a matching striker head with hickory peg. Both with a CA finish.

Wells i noticed your question. most people dont CA stabilized wood. because you can get in to shine with sanding to a high grit and some wet sand and polish. im abig fan of CA but just remember if your making a call to go into the field with you . you might want to keep the shine down. i got busted last season by a gobbler using my copper call when the morning sun came up and hit that copper playing serface he was out. just some food for thought.

Yes, I apply my Ca while on the lathe. I make my pots using a expanding mandrel so the application is the same basis a pens and duck calls. The hardest part is when applying on the bottom. Turn the speed down as low as you can and apply the ca from the outside towards the center. This helps to overcome the centrifugal force the spinning creates on the ca. That force has. Tendency to create small ridge lines. Applying out to in and learning the speed which to apply the ca just takes time. You may have to wet side a little more in the beginning but with practice it gets better.
