Reelfoot Lake October get together

The duck call makers and duck call collectors gathering at Reelfoot Lake on October 10th & 11th is 2 months away.  For those that have never been, the event is located at Samburg, TN along the shores edge of the famous Reelfoot Lake.

The gathering is shaping up to be a great one this year. So far, there a have been 15 booth spaces reserved. There are a few booth spots open yet, but they are going fast! 

Friday evening, plan on gathering at the Acorn Point hotel.  Lots of great duck calls will get bought and traded that evening at the Acorn Point.  Bring some calls and don't miss out!!  It is the hotel that the blue arrow points to below.

Saturday is full of activities too.  Vendor booths will be set up all day, there is a duck call makers competition in the morning, and call making seminars in the afternoon.  All of these activities are at the Eagles Nest. It is the hotel that the red arrow points to below.

There's activities at this event for everyone.

For call makers, if you've ever wandered how your calls rank against calls from other makers, this is THE event to bench mark where you are at.  This is one of the best Bragging Rights competitions out there.  This isn't a typical call operator calling competition.  This is a competition where one call operator, blows all of the calls in a particular category.  Having a single call operator running all of the calls levels the playing field, so that only the sounds produced from the calls can be judged against each other.  Only the sounds from the calls are judged.  The looks of the calls are not judged in this event. 

Another activity for call makers will be the seminars on Saturday afternoon.  Brad Samples will be putting on a demonstration on how to carve a duck into a duck call.  Ron Dowda will show us how he makes Reelfoot style inserts.  And the last event of the seminars is tailored towards the folks needing some help and guidance with making inserts.  Bring your inserts that you need some help with, and the panel will look them over and provide some feedback.  Its the best hands on feedback that a person can get when learning to make inserts.  The best part about all of the seminars, is that they are FREE!!

For those who haven't been to this event before I would highly recommend going, you will not be disappointed.  It is a very laid back event and being on the shores of Reelfoot gives it almost a majestic setting.  The best part of the whole weekend will be the people you meet, I promise.

Henry, once you go to this event, you will wander about 2 things - 1) why did I wait so long to go to this, 2) why is it such a long time until this event happens again next year.

In 2009, I was just getting into making duck calls. I had heard about this Reelfot event, and thought I should go to it. I had never met anyone in person that was going to be there, all I knew was there were people going to be there that I had met through the call making forums. I had no idea what to expect when I got there. When I arrived, I started putting a face to a name and started meeting folks. Then they introduced me to some more folks and they introduced me to some more folks, and by the time the weekend is over, you have practically met everyone there.

There is so much that you can learn at this place. Everyone there has the same interests, and rare to find such a laid back atmosphere where everyone wants to talk about duck calls. There are things that you can learn about by reading, but there are other things that you just can't quite figure out by reading. The things that you can learn at Reelfoot are those items that you can't quite grasp by reading. It's those things like my call sounds like this, where do I adjust to get it to sound better?  That hands on learning is just a wonderful thing.

After that first year that I attended the Reelfoot show, I made a commitment to myself that I wouldn't ever miss another one. It's that special of a time.

Brian, how far out do I have to make reservations?   I really want to make it this year but won't know for sure until closer to the date. 
Only a 537.1 mile drive.  Little over 8 hrs, but im pretty sure i can shave some time off of that.

I spoke to the guy at Southshore last year and they had 2 rooms left , but the earlier the better. A lot of the call makers stay there, we usually have a fish fry Saturday night to get all of the guy's together.

I will be sending a call or two to enter. Will not be attending    Something about homecoming weekend for my daughter. I have gave it some thought but she wins, I just cant miss her spneding my money to look like a princess for a night.  I didnt have to think real long.
