Band Saw HE!!
« on: July 28, 2014, 12:48:48 PM »
I am in band saw H E double hockey sticks...  I can not get the saw to cut a square board.

Background:

JET - JWBS-120S, 12" Band Saw, Incra Miter Gauge V27

Blade is tracking in center of tires\wheels - top and bottom
The tension is set to the blade size
The guides and thrust bearings are all set, top and bottom, to thick paper width from blade
Deck is square to blade vertical and horizontal and level.
Miter gauge set and locked to 0 degrees.

I still get a cut that is close to an 1/8!!! off on square, easy to visually see without even checking square.

Sometimes the "set" of the teeth are off and pull the blade one side to the other.  Did you try another blade?  Next step would be to try a wider blade.  Set your blade guides or cool blocks a thin paper's width off each side of the blade.  See if it helps?

Sounds a lot like a dull blade.  What has changed since last time it ran straight?  Search youtube for a good bandsaw tuning video by Alex Snodgrass.

Its a new blade its fairly wide 1/2" +  maybe 3/4 from memory ... when I say thicker paper, I am talking like post-it note thick, not lined notebook paper... so I am not sure its the blade guides.

Some days are "gremlin days", regardless of what you do right it just won't work.  Best thing to do is start all over and take the blade off and put it back on.

Marvin always has great advice, and this particular guidance is true about a lot of things!

Mine usually does that when i need a new blade.

You say its 1/8" off, how large a piece are you cutting?

Are you trying to cut against a fence? I have to find the set of the teeth and set the fence to match it to get a good square cut on mine. I had a few problems when I put my riser block in with the blade cutting a cupped shape, but I ended up figuring out that I was putting too much pressure when feeding the block in. Once I learned to relax the feed pressure and let the saw eat my problems went away. I did find out that there was a big difference in using a 3/4" blade and the 1/4" blade as far as performance and how much feed pressure to use.

 Good luck!

I thought the same so I did slow down the cut... but maybe not enough?  Still not there.
