So i went to check out some reclaimed lumber for another project and ended up trading a call for a giant piece of old walnut and this is the first one out of the slab.

I not really sure how I feel about the shape of the insert yet. Pic is terrible

I like Old School......heck, who cares...I love reclaimed lumber and Walnut makes a great call.  Keep on 'saving that money' my friend and enjoying the craft.  Call looks good.  You brought up the point about your insert.  Just turn the bottle bulge for the mouth piece down some, remove about 1/16- 1/8" up in that region and it looks like it will balance out proportionally then.  Small inserts are not always a bad thing, just because you might not be fond of it doesn't mean anything.  The next man may love it.  It'll be the first one to go on the display table.....how it always works for me.
