First squirrel call!
« on: July 02, 2014, 02:53:39 PM »
This is my first completed squirrel call.. Number one was walnut and didn't sand or finish very well at ALL! and the second one broke before I finished it....   :stickman1:  This one's made of cherry I got from Dbroswoods, and has a diluted teak oil, with tung oil over it for a finish. (I highly recommend trying the diluted teak with tung over it, Thanks for the idea wlain!!)  I even called in a squirrel with it after I got it put together!!  :2up:

Heres one just to give an example of how small it is....
If you look closely at my middle finger in this picture, you can see where It slid across the threads on my collet chuck while making this call!! Those threads are SHARP!  :hysterical:

And here's the squirrel I called in with it (I actually called in about 4 but I couldn't get a picture of 'em)

No squirrels were harmed in the making of this call!! Only because I missed him with my pellet gun!!  :hysterical:
Any critiques welcome!! ~David   Oh yeah! I forgot, Look at the wood in the background of those first two pics, can anyone guess what it is?

that is a good looking call. My problem is I dont shoot squirrels anymore. I grew up in a small town in North Carolina and hunted them to distraction. Every minute I wasnt fishing in the creek I hunted squirrels. My neighbor even hunted them early for squirrel and gravy with bisquits for breakfast. Then I started robbing nests and raising them. I carried one around in my coat pocket at school with a bottle of milk and coffee(for the caffeine).  Its a wonder they lived. They just got to cute to kill. For a long time now I had rather watch than eat them. Now I have a yard full and enjoy them. By the way, it may be illegal to keep one now, and be careful if you try to steal one. Possums like the nests and they bite and snakes too. Like I said, David, nice call and I wasnt trying to be moral police, just me.

Thanks Ray!! I know what you mean when you say they're to cute to kill, but my dad's in the pest control business and they are the biggest pain in the butt EVER!! So if I get a good shot on one I sometimes I will take it, but a lot of times I'll just watch them run around...    :thanks:
