Squirrel call questions
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:26:14 PM »
Well, I thought I'd try making squirrel calls so I could make some money while messing with my duck calls, Ive ordered the stuff from AL and it should be here this week (I hope) and I have a TON of questions!! lol.  1: Which way do I need to put the reed in to get a grey squirrel call?? I've read you have to put it this way and this and that but I still can't figure out which way to put it for a grey squirrel!! 2: Do I need to "Blade the pizz out of the reed" for a grey squirrel? Do I need to blade the reed for any squirrel call?? 3: Which bellow would be your first choice?? Small or large? 4: Is there a certain wood that is better for a squirrel calls then others? Or does it really matter? Thanks in advanced!! ~David
****EDIT****** I meant fox squirrels!!!! lol, I was thinking we had grey squirrels but we actually have fox squirrels around here!! Sorry for the confusion.....

David, wood choice will probably not give you a noticable difference in sound.  Yes, you will have to blade up or bend the reed to get the chatter of a squirrel.  I would recommend trying the small and large bellows to find your preference. Also, you can make an all wood call and get your sound by blowing it instead of using the bellows.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll help you along.

So I just ordered some squirrel call kits from Al and was wondering what do you mean by "blading" the reed?  I've never made a squirrel call so this is new territory for me as well.

James, I believe its just bending the reeds up to get a better sound, I'm not to sure though because I've never really understood it.... I should be getting my kits in today, but I'm working with my dad right now so I can't get them!! Lol. I still have to wait for my mandrel to get here anyways....

David... Did you order the large or small bellow kits?  I was wanting the small but all Al had in stock was the large.  Curious about the differences in sound, function, etc.

Here's a tutorial that I did for another sight. Maybe it will answer some of your questions.
