First Worthless Wood Blanks
« on: June 04, 2014, 05:07:59 PM »
Been wanting to do this for a while now. I have like these ever since I first laid eyes on some a long time ago.

Finally got around to trying it myself, few mesquite chunks with natural bark edges left over from cutting up blanks.

I think they turned out nice... Now to get down to turning them and seeing if they hold up.  Wish me luck.

I second that! Those look really cool. Was it hard to make?

Thanks guys!

I had to go ahead and at least try one of them...      The tub that I molded them in wasn't exactly square and the blank on the left, I kinda thought it wouldnt make a call because of the curves from the bowl.

So I thought it would be a good one to try, make sure that they would hold together and to give me an idea of what they would look like.

Well I was wrong about it not being large enough to make a call... and make a call it did!   I am very pleased with the overall turn out of this call. The mouth piece almost looks like a glue up, totally not designed that way! Anyway. This is is after turning, a little sanding and a few coats of CA.

As for it being hard.... Was one of the easiest things to do, we just poured everything in the bowl with the blank and hoped for the best.  Turned out great.

Did you put it under pressure or anything?  And is it polyester resin or what?  Those are sure sweet looking blanks and love the call too!

Thanks!

And yes they have to be under pressure, we have been pouring our own blanks for over a year now just have never tried these for some reason... Best bet, we will be casting everything in site now... LOL

What kind of resin did you use?
