Duck Call Reed Punch
« on: June 03, 2014, 05:41:09 PM »
Does anyone know where I could get a reed punch done so I can do that instead of hand cutting them all.

Send an email to Wade @ webfoot

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Not sure what Wade sells. I built my own. Somewhat like a paper cutter. having access to a mill and welding equip. and 15 yrs of that trade sure helps. Raided the scrap dumpster at work and played junk yard wars.  Not  a original design, Another call make showed me his and I went from there.
using the reed sheets from River mallard

Cut the width, the stop is adjustable under the main body.

Cut the length, I have a pencil mark I line up

Cut one dog ear

cut the other lining both up with a pencil mark.

Finished reed and all things are adjustable to get to the perfect reed

I use on of these, borrowed it from my wife and bought her a new and bigger version.  It is a Fiskar's paper cutter, you can find them at most good craft stores.  It cuts me a perfect width every time.  For the length and dog ears I use a pair if Fiskar's scissors.

Dang, Ron!  I like that homemade reed cutter!

Dogcatcher... does the cutter you use have a rolling blade or a blade that just slides back and forth?  Reason I ask is because I tried one similar to what you showed and it cut ok but it had the tendancy to drag on the reed material to the point it would move the mylar and I'd end up with a curved cut.  Make sense?  Thinking the mylar was just too thick for what the cutter was designed for.

:offtopic: Where do you even buy sheets of mylar? I've been buying the ones from Pintail, but if this is cheaper I'd like to try it.

I have several sheets I had given to me by a call maker who quit making calls. I am going to have to give wade a shout! Also that homemade cutter looks like it works like a charm nice going!

That's downright nifty, Ron.  Very clever elements.  I never got the idea of an actual punch really, since hand-drilled tone channels are all just a hair different, requiring some length cutting anyway.  Now, goose reed punches and punches for the CNC calls are a different story.  You're design is perfect for most of the duck call makers on here in my opinion.

Also, David, sheets can be bought from RiverMallard. Hut supplies has them as well.

Ron, that's a hell of a reed cutter you've got there!
I'm definitely going to take that idea and make something similar out of wood, a dollar tree cookie sheet, and half a pair of scissors.
