Curly Koa with brass
« on: March 22, 2014, 08:53:45 PM »
Here's another one I've been wanting to do for a long time.  Andrew (HaddenHailers) inspired me with a brass-capped call he posted today, so I camped out in the shop for the better part of the day making this one.  It is my first time trying to turn brass - that really takes time and patience.  It isn't as flawless as Andrew's, but I'm pleased with it and it will go in my call collection (sounds good, but too heavy to carry).  This one has a phosphur bronze reed.  I stabilized the koa, ans this call is simply polished and waxed.

C&C welcomed and appreciated.

So that is what good koa looks like! I only buy the cheap (aka*Junk) because man that stuff costs an arm an a leg. Beautiful, try using brasso for a higher shine on the brass. It will take out even the micro scratches if you put it on while the lathe is running (any metal polish will work). Just watch your heat and make sure you don't fill the pores of your wood with brass paste ~Andre'
