My first 2 pens!!!!
« on: June 01, 2014, 09:20:53 PM »
Well, I got tired of messing with my duck call toneboards for a while so I thought I'd try some pens. The first one is Paduak and some mystery wood from a cabinet shop. I used the sanding dust from the Paduak to dye the lighter wood a pale red. The second one is full Zebra Wood, I didn't want to make it the same as the first one so I made the front piece rounded. both are finished with teak oil and waxed. Any tips/critiques are appreciated!!!

Pens look good I would personally use a CA finish on an ink pen. Oil finishes, if the pens get used a lot will also pic up the oils in your hands and stain them over time. Pens are a great way to supplement tools and materials when game calls aren't in season or selling. I've made alot of pens to help build relationships with people that typically wouldn't be buying a game call aswell and that can give excellent word of mouth advertising for you. Once you get down the slim lines start on the bullet pens they sell great especially with antler. Then you cam move onto high end fountains that can sell for a ton.....recently sold a fountain for 200$ So there's diffently $ to
Be made good luck and if you need any help hollar at me!

Thanks guys!! Mac, I made these in like 10 minutes and I didn't want to use CA on them because it takes so long. The first one probably wont get used much and I'm going to give the second one to my uncle so I don't care what he does with it. (I REALLY don't like him but my dad told me to make him somethin') I think I'm going to try one of those bullet pens next time. Do the click pens sell?? Or are most people interested in the twisty ones?   :thanks:

People like either I've found. The twist is pritty much standard on the bullet pen kits but they also come click pens. The more you do the CA finish on pens the better you'll get it also helps ya perfect CA application in calls. I do nothing but CA finish on ink pens just simply because it's hard to beat for looks and function.
