Wish I was better at checkering
« on: March 05, 2014, 08:55:44 PM »
This was my latest attempt. I owe any and all checkering efforts to Big B and Wes. I really dont have the patience or enjoy it. Hopefully power carving will be more fun

Looks great to me... on my list to learn, too, but not sure I have the patience, either!

Checkering is such a relaxing activity. And Scott, there ain't nothing wrong with that checkering job right there!  Looks great!

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Beautiful call Scott! I wish I could get up the nerve to try checkering a call.
Tried a gun stock once. What a mess.

Thanks guys. I literally loathe the checkering. How Brian sees it as relaxing is beyond me, lol. :stickman1:

I have a hunch I'd feel the same way if I ever spent time on it.  Just a tedious process.  But I'll admit that I'm drawn to it because the process really fascinates me, and I blame Brian for that.  If only the results came faster for those of us that aren't as patient.  For the same reason, I don't do segmented calls.  The steps just don't progress fast enough to keep my interest up.  I sure do respect the heck out of guys that do both processes well.  Power carving is a little different for me from what I've found, as you can see tangible results in pretty short order.  I think I like turning so much because the shape constantly changes and the steps seem to come faster, even if I spend hours on something.

Your checkering sure looks like you enjoyed it, even if you didn't.  Beautiful work.
