micarta safety?
« on: January 13, 2014, 07:34:21 PM »
A customer sent this block of linen "micarta" (not sure of the brand/source) to me to have a call made.  I want to be ultra safe and make sure it isn't some of the old stuff that had asbestos in it.  He thinks it is newer but couldn't say for sure.  Can anybody tell by looking at it if it is something I should be worried about turning in my shop?  If it were the asbestos type I wouldn't consider turning it.

If you can't tell from the pic, it is brown in color.

The brown stuff that I have just like that isn't made with asbestos. The asbestos stuff is paper based primarily and a vanilla color.

Not Old Westinghouse brother.  Your clear to get covered in nasty smelling dust.
Just an FWI....the original asbestos Westinghouse Micarta smells like band aids when turned.  The stuff right after they quit using asbestos also smells the same but that is a fair indication.

I would be nervous about working with it.  As a past building inspector dealing with hazardous materials and a lot of asbestos I was often surprised as to what I thought did not contain any asbestos????  If you are not 100% sure you can probably have it tested at your local health department.
