Need help identifying type of wood!
« on: November 08, 2013, 09:43:47 AM »
So I was looking for a good two tone piece of wood for my next call last week so I ran over to woodcraft and found one I liked. It wasn't until later that I realized the wood was completely mislabelled (and probably wrong price too!) So was wandering what you guys think.

Due to virus and spam issues and the space photos take up, you cannot upload photos to the forum using the forum data base.

If you go to the top of the Call Making Section you will see a section called Custom Call Making Resource Center -  click on that

Then click on General Call Making Tutorials

On the right at the bottom you will see a tutorial on using photobucket to post photos.   Follow that and you will be fine.

Thanks guys, I guess that's it. Just never seen the sap wood from cocobolo, but it definitely looks good on a call IMO

Took it back to the store, found out it is Bubinga wood. Glad I did, got $15 bucks back! (Then spent it on more wood  :hysterical:)

That doesn't look like bubinga to me either. I'm pretty sure it is kingwood. That is the only wood that I know of that has that super white sapwood and rippled end grain often. :2: ~Andre'

Quite sure that isn't bubinga... at least it is like no bubinga I've ever seen.  Kingwood is a good possibility, as is cocobolo.  Here are a couple pics of some calls I made from coco that had a little sapwood, for comparison.

They must have the wood mislabeled, since they had a 2x6x6 piece that was identical labeled as bubinga, but after a google image search, I agree with you guys it definately isn't bubinga. However, I did just cut a piece of rosewood (forget which type) that looked nearly identical so that may be a possibility. Kingwood or rosewood i guess.
