How do you lay out a raised panel call?
« on: January 07, 2012, 06:48:20 AM »
Hi Gang!
I'm hoping to do a few raised panel calls and am wondering how is the best way to go about it.  I don't think I have seen a tutorial on it anywhere.    :whistling:
Also, how about finishing one that is checkered?
Thanks!
Doug

You need an indexing wheel and I finish with an oil, like Tru-Oil, Velvit or Teak.  I use a 5C collet spin indexer, a little over kill, but I got it real cheap.  Oh and I usually do checkering my way, about 2 lines per inch with a saw, and a file.

Doug, like Marvin said an indexing head works the best to divide up the call for your panels. I use a small laser level set on my tailstock to divide up the call and then just connect the dots using a piece of tape. Then I take a small hand gouge and cut out the excess material between the panels. Not rocket science , just takes a little time like anything else.......

Couple pretty neat calls there and I like the checkering also.

Thanks guys!  That got the wheels turning in my brain.... :punk:
I really like the idea of a laser level, now I'm going to dig in the shop and see if I can find mine.

I have not done any in a couple of years but I just divided the call into quarters and then used a  diamond shaped template made from mylar reed material to lay out the panels.

Spacing and measurements are CRUCIAL when doing raised panels!!!!!  I try to keep the trough width between the upper and lower panels uniform all the way around the call.  If your layout and dimensions of the upper panels aren't exact, the lower panels will have different heights at the top.  And I hate it when that happens.   :surrender:  Look at the height of the tops on the lower panels on this call.  They aren't at the same height.

I did 3 this way before I figured out what I was doing wrong.   :hammer:

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

BigB, what do you use to cut the troughs or flat bottomed spaces between the individual panels?  I'm thinking a 3/16" mortise chisel will do the job but since I don't have one and want to do raised panels, I'll have to purchase one, so before I do that, I thought I'd ask.  Thanks much.  MadTrapper
