Acorn Call
« on: August 29, 2013, 09:54:55 PM »
Well a saw some of the acorn calls that some of you guys have done and I figured I'd give it a try.  I haven't got to put any kind of finish on it yet.  Do you all put a stain or anything on the acorn cap to give it the darker color?

I don't stain the cap. I sand the nut portion down to 600 grit and leave the hull unsanded. This lets more finish soak into the hull and naturally makes it darker.

I also use a dremel tool with an 1/8" burr. I push the burr into the wood so that it burns more than cuts. This gives extra color to the hull.

I've made several out of black walnut and use Brent's approach.  Leaving the hull unsanded allows the teak oil I use to soak in more and makes it darker.
