Finally completed one
« on: June 30, 2013, 09:09:50 PM »
A friend has gotten me into burlaping my old herters decoys, so I have not done a call for a while. I finally took a break and finished this bacotte call for a lawyer buddy of mine. It is my first attempt with teak oil and I think I really like how the finish turned out. Its Quite heavy due to all the brass.

Looks great. Did you turn down the brass yourself?

I did turn the brass. It is softer than stainless, by a long way and holds up a lot better than aluminium. I think brass is my favorite  metal to work with. It was a solid rod so there was a lot of waste! I use a mini lathe, good for metal and wood.

Very nicely done.

I use a lot of teak oil on oily woods like bocote. Makes a real nice finish.
Nice call!

I use clear acrylic for the gut zert. I stopped using aluminum because I was having trouble when it was cold, haveing  the guts loosen up and fall out. I have had better luck using plastic for both.
