I've finished these three up in the last couple days. Had to get these finished up because hand surgery's going to keep me off the lathe for a good two weeks (unless I can sneak down there without momma finding out), so it'll be a nice little unwanted vacation from getting customer orders done. I'll have enough of a job trying to change twin three year old boys' diapers with one hand. That ain't gonna be pretty. Neither is having to constantly defend my stitched up hand from twin boy attacks.
This one is ivory acrylic. Not my favorite color of acrylic but I sure get a lot of folks asking for it. Hard to photograph!
A little curly maple. I had this stuff stabilized by Mel at Wood Dynamics just because I wanted to see how it took. It stabilized quite well. This one has a buffed oil finish. I could do curly maple calls all the time...I just love the stuff.
I need you guys' opinion on this one. A customer of mine wants quite a few whistles made from osage but wants a greenish/brownish aged look. This whistle is my "prototype" with steel wool/vinegar stain on a whistle. I've done it on a lot of duck calls but the whistle was a much greater challenge to get it right. I'm not too sure what I think of it to be honest. In your hand, it does look like it is 50 years old. The undulating shape really makes it take the stain oddly, because the end grain gets really dark and the flat grain doesn't. I hate taking a perfect call and making it look imperfect, so my jury's still deliberating on this one and of course it'll be my customer's ultimate decision on whether we proceed with a bunch more or not. Would love some honest opinions on it. The finish is a couple buffed coats of Velvit oil. At least it sounds darn good.
