teal call soundboards
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:10:35 AM »
Greetings.

I'm curious if anyone has messed with a teal call, for the hen quack as oposed to the whistle.  I've seen Haydel's and one a friend came up with, but I've been working on one.

I used a smaller tone channel on my only jig, (which meant a 5/8" bore on the barrel), and tuned it to the point I was happy, but wondered if anyone had tried smaller bores or had some ideas to share.

Thanks,

Pete

Pete,

I use a 7/32 bore, and a real short tone channel. Tune it high, and it will be perfect for the small birds. Best of luck.

Thanks for the info Bob.

I did pretty much that, although I  kept the tone channel the same as my mallard calls and tuned it up high.  I'll try the shorter channel on the next one.

I only have mandrels in 5/8" and 3/4", so I'll have to be creative if I want to try a smaller bore on the barrel.  In the process I did learn a neat way to keep a smaller tennon centered in the jig.... but ten minutes later I blew up a great sounding mallard toneboard being overzealous in re-shaping the exhaust part.  Live and learn.  It was the first upslope soundboard I had made that I really liked, but at least I have the parts to learn from.

Those look alot like whistles I've seen in France.  Did you make them?

Thanks,

Pete

Sorry... I just asked.  I've seen guys post photos of calls they've come across one way or another.

I'll just look from now on.
