My First Crow-Call
« on: January 14, 2013, 06:46:48 PM »
Well a special thanks to Jon @ Jrwoods for the mulberry here. I used a CA finish, and followed up with sanding micro-mesh pads up to 12000. The picture doesn't do much for the finish... it's real shiny and feels super smooth. Any criticism is appreciated.

Looks purdy good David!! Looks like that CA finish is gonna work for you. Glad you got it figured out!!   :up1: :up1:

No criticism here. Just a suggestion. If you make the lanyard groove a little deeper you won't have as much risk of losing that fine call.

thanks for the complements!

And HaMeR I see what you mean. I'm definitely gonna need to deepen the grooves. Actually, everything was deeper, even the coves, before I started sanding. but I messed up the finish on this twice, so i did a TON of sanding with this call and made everything smoother, and less pronounced.

If only all my calls worked out like this with the CA finish. i'm about 1 for 5 right now :down1:

1-5 is purdy good!! OH-5 isn't all that great!! I started using a different brand of CA. I will have to go look and see which one it is. But it goes on silky smooth with very little sanding needed after 12-15 coats.

 It might be the Gorilla brand.

Well my CA is instantly absorbed by the paper towel.. It's like my ca glue is water and instantly soaked up. Is this due to temperature? Paper towel? Ca brand?

I am using the LOCTITE brand right now with VIVA paper towels. THO Al highly recommends using these as do the other fine call makers here. They really are superior to the other brands for what we do.

It sounds like you are using the thin CA. It is a tad thicker than water & the towel will soak some up. I put a small puddle on the towel & wipe it across quickly. I leave my CA in my unheated garage & set it on the electric heater as soon as I get out there to turn something. An occasional shaeup of the bottle worms it thru & thru by the time I'm ready to use it.
