saw question
« on: November 04, 2008, 06:41:20 PM »
Just wondering, how many use a band saw and how many use a scroll saw to cut their reed holders etc. on their calls...
I use a band saw but have been thinking about going to a scroll saw, just because of the cost of the blades.
Those steel jigs will knock the set off a band saw blade before quick...

thanks
I may not be smart, but I can lift heavy object...

I use a band saw for the rough cutting, but use a belt sander to get insert to match the slope of the jig.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

coping saw for me. It is the cheapest way, and since I am not a production maker it works fine for me. Shawn

I bought a cheap scroll saw off of Craigs list just to cut the toneboards. I hate the vibration, but still use it. I put on a new blade about every third or forth cut. I'm still thinking about how to set up a router or shaper to do this....

I also use a coping saw/fret saw to cut my toneboards and then file to final shape.

Scroll saw when using a jig, if freehand I use the bandsaw.

I actually wind up using both on my inserts. The bandsaw will not cut out the small piece at the end of the cork notch, so I use the scrollsaw to get that small piece cut
