Roughing up the slate
« on: October 30, 2008, 11:47:34 AM »
All,

What grit sand paper do you use to rough up your slate before using it?  150?  400?

Thanks!

120 for me.  That way, when the customer goes to play on it, no matter what striker they use, it will grab.  If they happen to have more grabby strikers, I also include a chunk of VERY FINE scotch brite pad for their use.  (You can buy it by the box on Amazon.com).

For slate I use the scotch brite. For the copper and glass surfaces I use the sanding mesh in 180 for dry wall as a maintainer after etching the glass. The copper surface I use 150 to 180 grit. You can use rougher or finer on the metal calls to vary the tone or pitch a bit as well. :D
