Stabilized Wood (Finishing)
« on: October 29, 2008, 11:33:59 AM »
When you finished a stabilized wood when making a pen do you do use anything different. I guess what I am really asking since the stabilized wood has been impregnated with CA glue do you finish it like any other raw wood or do you finish it like a you do with acrylic?

Stoner-- Depending on the way the wood turns is what determines whether I use an extra CA coat or not. If the wood looks fuzzy then I CA it again. Fuzzy wood will tear lengthwise on you & Hickory is a good example.   I like hickory but not for small turnings. Also turn the lathe off a few times after the blank goes round. Check for little tear out holes. This sometimes occurs in the stabilized woods. If it's a burl I just give it a 2nd CA coat to help preserve the beauty.

Finishing will look the best if you go high thru the grits. I hit mine with 220/320/400 sandpaper then 500/1000/2000/4000 Abralon. Then I use a friction polish with 2-3 coats of Carnauba wax buffed on.
