Engraving Metal Bands
« on: March 07, 2008, 01:44:27 AM »
To start for lettering I use the computer,I pick a fonts type that I like and a size that will fit the band. Then you will have to space the lettering to fit the band, this will take some time to get it layed out.

I keep printing test sheets and cut out the lettering in strips and test fitting around the band.

Once you get it to fit.

Now it is time to print this on stencil film.I use SCM's stencil film it has a adhesive back.

Once you get get it printed on stencil film you are almost ready to start engraving.

The next thing you need to do is cut out your lettering in a strip and put it on your band. You can measure it out but I just eye it.

Once you get it lined up you can start engraving.

I use a SCM engraver and the bit I will be using is a # 16 fine point. You will need some magnifying glasses and something to hold the band.I use a wood clamp,I also fill a ziplock full of sand to rest my arm on. To start you just want to trace out the letters you don't have to cut deep.

Once you get you letters traced out.You can remove the stencil film.

You now need to make the letters stand out to do this we will be relief cutting. You just need to remove a small amount of metal around the lettering then you need to feather it out so there is not a ledge.

After you get it relief cut all you have to do is stapple it.All stappling is is using the tip of the bit and going in small circles with no pattern. But you will need to go over it a few time because you will see areas you missed.

After you are done with the stappling all need to do is buff on the buffing wheel.

That's very cool Troy.  Let me know if you want me to add that to the tutorial section.   It would not be hard at all.

That's great Troy. It's just like how I figured you did it, but it is great to see the pictures along with the discription. Thanks a lot. Really appreciated. Get my engraver tomorrow, and have already ordered some bits. You said you used a #16 fine point. Where did you get the bit?

You guy are welcome. I am glad you liked it
This is the engraver I use but there are many different makes of engravers.Braz this is also where I get my bits, but you need to make sure they fit your type of engraver.Foredom has jewerler bits and I am sure thay have a fine point bit that will work.

Thanks for the link. I checked it out and the bits there look just like the ones I ordered. I should be good to go.
