First Crow Call, Hand-Carved, Dipped Finish
« on: May 21, 2012, 10:19:21 PM »
Here's my very first Crow Call. I hand-carved it, out of a piece of basswood. Shout-out to Steve Kincaid for the basswood! I love it! I dipped it in polyshade, natural cherry, to finish. Let me know what you guys think. Thoughts, opinions, and criticism are all very welcome. Thanks for looking.

Glad to see you were hopefully able to pass along some knowledge to the young man HaMer.  :2up:  There's so much to learn when you got a good teacher.

David is soaking everything up like a sponge Dave. I just showed him a couple things on the lathe & try to answer questions. You & the rest of the THO Members along with David himself get all the credit.

I think the biggest thing he is learning is patience. He is getting the understanding of just how long some of these things take to do & that all the tools in the world won't put out a good product if the patience is not there. Good tools or bad the quality of work still comes from that person's ability to learn the proper techniques with them 1st.
RIP Russ,Blaine,& Darrell!!

It's great of you to show him Glen.  He could not have found a better teacher.  About the impatience thing? We've all battled that demon. LOL!  It's grand when we can post pictures of a finished product.  But sometimes if we'd just listened to that little voice and put a bit more time into it..The end product would be so much nicer. It's all the worse when you are young.  But some things just can't be rushed.
Once again, it's very nice of you to take the time to help a fellow woodworker out.  I know David sure appreciates it.

I agree completely. I still get excited & a bit over anxious on some things I make. I just quit & go in the house & let things set for a day or 3. Just to regroup my thoughts & allow the stress/anxiety of building something from roughsawn lumber to subside. For me that never gets old. I think David will be fine. He has a weekend job this Summer so that should help him with his patience.

It is my pleasure to help the young man out. Thank You for the vote of confidence in me. I appreciate it.

BTW-- I do need to add that Dave Sr has accompanied David on our visits. He brings a level of Parenting to the table that is slowly being lost. He keeps things very real for David in all the things we've talked about & I think he is a very supportive positive influence on his Family.
RIP Russ,Blaine,& Darrell!!

I cantvthank both of you enough. I truly am so grateful for all the help I've gotten. I'm speechless..

And actually my job is gonna be full-time this summer... So the patience will be even more pushed. I come home after work and am exhausted....call making seems impossible at that hour

 @ the exhausted after work feeling!!!!!!!

It only gets wosre as you get older too David!! What with the Wife & kids pleading for attention. Then all the ball games & dinner parties the Mrs will be dragging you too. Plus the occasional hunting trip that the Mrs will allow you to take once a month. And if you miss this month there's no extra do-over. You LOST IT!!!!!   :hysterical: :hysterical:

All I need is an honest  :thanks: & we are even.

You're  :welcome:

All of us married guys can say we felt the same at one point in time.  "No woman will ever tie me down!"  And then she shows up and you do.  Strange how that happens.  The next thing you know you're driving her and her mother around shopping in Dallas.  Right past the Cabelas to the outlet mall.  (I did leave her mother in Dallas, so fair trade.)
Don't be scared....resistance is futile.
The call looks good, its a challenge to make bass wood look pretty.  You dressed it up really nice.

ouch....that whole part on driving past cabelas to the mall just struck really deep....that's painful. I wouldn't settle for anything less than a compromise, 1 hour at the mall and 3 hours at cabelas  ::)
