Doug from Rivermallard had a good tip in this a last month.  he gets the black ones at walmart. they fit great under the notch.  I picked some up and they work just fine.

Get the ones with the foam in the middle. They are about a 1/4'' thick.

I have a few of the hard ones, not a big fan of the foam ones. I also have several different pieces of plexi glass with different grits of emery cloth glued down that I probably use more that anything.

Emery Cloth is simple sanadpaper but with a cloth backing rather than paper backing. A quick search on the internet will have you plenty of results.  http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=yfp-t-701-s&va=emery+cloth

I have some 1/8" pleaxiglass I glue my emery cloth to and make a flat area to sand my tone boards with. You can also use a thin sheet metal and use sticky back sand paper or even glue sand paper to the sheet metal.

I found the foam filled emery boards would not hold a flat surface as it bends when pressure is aplied "Just my experience" doesnt mean everyone has the same experience with it.

Hope this helps.

6" machinest rule, the rigid kind, contact cement and sandpaper and you can finish the tone board to any finish you want and it will be flat. I usually don't use the cement. I just wrap the sandpaper around the rule a couple of times and then just change sides as the paper fills up.
You might as well buy several. The edges are square and they make great scrapers for the tone board before you sand and the edge is straight so you can use it to  see if the tone board is both flat and level.

Buy some flat metal, 1/16 to 1/8 thick.  Use the self sticking sandpaper on them.  I use the Simpson Strong-Tie brand construction stuff that carpenters use to scarf lumber together.  They have them at the lumber yard where the metal joist strap hangers are.  about a buck a piece.  Galvanized, so they don't rust and stiff enough that they do not bend and you sand all the way to the end of the cork notch.  Just place them on the edge of the workbench and you can keep the toneboard flat.  I use 180 grit and 220 grit for wood and for acrylic I have them all the way up to 800 grit.

They look like this except they have square cornerss.
