"oiled and waxed"
« on: May 04, 2012, 04:05:29 PM »
When guys make calls and sell them, I often see them stated as "oiled and waxed" for the finish.  I suspect that refers to a peice of wood that was dried, turned, and finished with oil and wax.  My question is what oil do you use and what type of wax?  Is the oil and call put in a chamber and pressurized to ensure good penetation or is it rubbed on.  Any insite would help.  thanks.

I don't know too much about wax, but I do use Tung oil and Tru oil on some of my calls.  Both of which are rubbed in.  Tru oil is what you use to finish gun stock and be built up to a shiny finish where tung oil is more a a matte finish for me at least.

I would say 95% of my duck calls are finished with CA and 5% with tung oil.  My turkey calls are 95% Tru oil and 5% tung oil.

I am real good at making clear water muddy.  So, I hope this helps some how.

For the life of me I do not know why one would apply an oil finish on a call, and then wax.  Its ok I guess, but like any other wax application it will need constant cleaning and rewaxing.  I've never applied wax to any call.

Well I normally stabilize all my wood, but have been doing alot of reading and was curious as to the process and benefits if any.  Ill stick with CA for now, but I like a more satin finish.  Thanks guys.

Here is the best read ever about the oil and wax finish.

Here is another good oil finish.  Frank Whiton is considered an expert in gunstock finishes.  As to the wax, I always wax my calls after they are finished.  Most of the time I use a paste wax, but also use the hard waxes that I apply with a buffing wheel.  If I use the buffing wheel method I use a microcrystalline wax that I get at a local supplier, it a hard wax version of Renaissance wax.

Wow both good reads makes CA finish sound pleasant.  I was supprised at the time involved in that process.
