Yellowheart - Good or Bad?
« on: October 12, 2008, 09:27:49 AM »
Anyone ever try Yellowheart?  I'm thinking of giving it a try.  Claims to be a hard wood and does not fade over time?  Are there any particular woods you guys stay away from?  The only wood I will never buy again is Satine'.  Hard as a rock and brittle as can be.

Any feedback on Yellowheart would be great. I'm gonna look for some pic's of the stuff.

Sorry Mutt, never worked with it. Did you ever find any Texas ebony yet. I might call over to the hardwood connection and see what they have. If they have some, I will let you know. When do you get back to port?        Ryan

Only wood I'll never work again is cocobolo.  Breaks out the inside of my arms like poison ivy.

I try not to turn oak for calls either.  TOO much sanding to get things really smooth.

Ryan, I entered into some e-dialogue with a guy at Texas Wood Works(?) and he has some.  He claims it's "green" but has not had trouble turning it.  I'm a bit leary of that for obvious reasons.  If you run across some, I'd appreciate a pm or posting here.  Can't say exactly when we're getting back for security reasons but it won't be too much longer.  Appreciate you looking out ;)

Mutt,
Yellow heart works really good on turkey calls,  I have made a few duck calls from it, it sound good.  I like to work with it better than osage.

Thanks Pat & all.  I think initially I'm going to use the yellowheart as an accent in multi-wood projects.  It looks like it could be a pretty wood if combined with the right dark wood.  Any pic's out there from something ya'll have made with YH?

Thanks,

Mutt!

weird?
I have had just the opposite experiance. Maybe because it's so dang humid here it takes wood twice as long to dry ? I sweare some days it gains weight.

Curmudgeon.... :D I hear ya!  Not to completely shift gears, but i think one of my favorite woods to work with is Honey Mesquite.  When finsished, a brand new call willl still look 70 years old.  That stuff has an "old" look to it.  You get some occasional samll worm holes which add to the "look".  May be too early in the thread to consider a "who's who" in wood, but it may be worthy of a thread of it's own?  If you will, a good, bad, or indifferent thread of wood types, sources of supply, experiences, etc..?  It's probably been done before and I'm too lazy to go search for it  :-[

I have used yellowheart for turkey call pots, and as an accent wood on some goose and deer calls. I like it, smells like burnt rubber when you turn it. I am not a big fan of the smell but like the results.

Huh......yep, odd.  That stuff warps like no one's biz on me.

I've since been letting it air dry for three years and have not cut into it since I've decided to let it set.

MUtt, I don't have any. I looked through my collection and I don't have any calls or pics. If I get a chance I will make one up and post some pics.
