Stabilized maple burl
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:20:39 AM »
Steve from reelseatblanks.com asked me to make a goose call for his brother for his upcoming birthday.  A trade deal between us.  He sent me a blank of stabilized double dyed spalted maple burl...The likes of which I've never seen!  So here's what I came up with.  Used a Shell Creek gutsert, all polished up.  One of Ron's bands, my logo on one side and the "to and from" on the other side.  SR1 guts that I fiddled with a little bit.  5/8" mouth step drilled at the barrel, 5/8" bore at the insert, and it runs nice and loud.  CA finish.

Very Nice call! I have one concern when looking at it! I have quit using the alum gut cert due to expansion problems with the alum when it gets warm and it expands and have a tendincy of cracking calls, i have started useing delrin and Pvc for all my guts certs now and have had no problem, you did a very nice job on that one

That is one pretty piece of work.

Jon, not to discount what you're saying but I've made quite a few of these with aluminum gutserts and a lot of them got hunted hard the last couple seasons with no problems like you describe.

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Yup that looks great Donnie!  Man, I posted three pictures of three calls last night and they were all really yellow.  I need to do some tweaking on my exposure, white balance and probably my lighting.

It's just the white balance is out of whack.
