Look what I picked up
« on: July 14, 2012, 05:58:40 PM »
Asked one of the older electricians at work last nite if he knew what micarta was. Of course he did, and i told him if he ever ran across any that they were going to scrap out to let me. Well he told me jump in the truck with and we would go get some. This stuff came straight out of a Westinghouse box. I told him thatthe Westinghouse micarta was suppose to be the good stuff to  and that I thought it was suppose to be a lighter color. He said yes some was and some was more of a tan to brown. So here is my find. It was a 1 1/4"x 3" x25" piece but i cut it down to bring home.

One of the down sides of Westinghouse Micarta is that it has Asbestos in it so be very careful turning that stuff . It does make a great sounding call......

Not all Westinghouse micarta had asbestos in it though. That looks to be like a canvas micarta. The highly sought after Westinghouse micarta was a paper micarta, and it did have asbestos in it.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

I have a good buddy that has an original Micarta from Butch at RNT from back in the early 80's, and the color of his call is similar to the color of this block, I say similar, not exactly. I believe the one he has is the paper Micarta  rather than the weave material. Kitch

Just curious, but what would they have used that stuff for back in the day?

This piece came out of an electrical box. Common uses of modern high pressure laminates are as electrical insulators, printed circuit board substrates.

Also used in airplane propellers, hard hats, serving trays, etc.
