What finish over acrylic paint?
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:55:47 PM »
I'm having an artist paint up some of my turkey calls for me to make a limited edition.  Gonna be a pretty cool deal.  Wood harvested by my grandfather in KS, me working the calls out of it in MO, and Mr. Walters doing the art work in IA.  The Midwest Connection Series.   ;D

So......my question is.....what kind of finish should I use on the calls to cover up the art work that will be done in acrylic paint?  I usually finish them with a sander/sealer and laquer.  And I've started playing with this spar urethane.

Is there a good finish out there to use on something like this, or should I just keep the calls natural and have them be display only?

I think that is a question you should address to your artist. He should have an idea what would work over the paint that he is using with causing any problems and last well, providing the protection you are looking for.

I think they use  shellac, but I am only thinking and that is not one of my best attributes.  I would go with Braz and ask the artist.

Unfortunately, I asked the artist, and the answer was, "I think any clear coat will work".   :-\

Have your artist take a couple blocks of wood and just paint a couple swatches of color on each one.  Then try different finishes on them.
One I woould look at is Krylon Clear Acrylic.  I know a few guys who use it on calls and it is very hard and durable, and  acrylic so it might be compatable.

Even if he can't get you the blocks, ask him the brand name of the paint and pick some up and try it yourself.  You should only need one color to get an idea of if it will run or damage the paint,

I would try the spray type finishes before I tried the brush on ones too. HTH
