Several months ago I found a really nasty piece of wormy hickory that was full of knots, including the one in the middle of this call. I initially finished it with a gloss Tru Oil finish and glued a glass surface and a glass soundboard in it. Some of you might remember seeing it on here. The knot goes all the way through the wood, so it has a lot of void space. I never liked the look of the call since you could see through the soundboard. Seeing all the goop on the pedestal drove me nuts. So I took a torch to the glass and heated it until it came out. Then did the same thing to the soundboard. Buffed the gloss off the finish with 0000 steel wool and took it down to a more natural look. Then I glued a black aluminum soundboard in it. It has a new glass surface in it and it sounds awesome. And I'm a lot happier with the look. This one's staying with me!
I need to dig through my hickory and come up with an equally nasty piece for a matching striker.
