Rookie Crow Call Attempter Question
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:57:34 PM »
So I turned the bottom of my crow call, man it was looking good.  Then I read the how to on turning the guts down to fit in the call, on my phone cause I'm so impatient I don't take a break to get the computer fired up.  I start turning down the first one, boom!  It blows up.   :stickman1:  Ok, maybe I'm just turning too fast.  Next one......BOOM!   :stickman1:  Even at lower speed it hates me.  Anyway, can you guys help a duck call make out with his first crow call please?

Thanks ahead of time!

Use a 100 grit gouge and turn it down that way rather than using a tool.

May take a little longer, but you shouldn't blow anything up.

You can also use a coarse file to turn it down without breakage. Sounds like your parts are flexing as you turn and then it catches where the parts come together. Make sure your tools are sharp and the tool rest is close to your work.

I'm not sure what the directions say, but have you taped the mouth end of the parts together with masking or electrical tape?  That will help a LOT too.

The wooden ones will come apart too.  :devil2:  I use double sided carpet tape to hold the halves together. And even then they will explode.

I did the electrical tape and I was using sharp tools. I think I like the file idea. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks guys!

Do yourself a favor and buy an MT2 reamer.

Best money you can spend if your going to be making crow calls.  IMHO
