It is turkey call makin' season again!
« on: January 01, 2012, 04:51:20 PM »
Haven't made a turkey call in quite some time, but got orders for a couple recently.  So I guess these are the first two of the season for me.

The first is osage orange, flamed with a Tru Oil finish four coats thick.  I CA finished the striker, which is something I haven't tried on a striker before.  It has a black anodized/blasted surface and a glass soundboard.  It purrs and tree talks really softly and has good range all the way up to ear splitting loud.  This one is going to a customer in Alabama.

The second is curly claro walnut.  It has three coats of Tru Oil, buffed out to a low gloss finish.  Slate surface and a glass soundboard.  With the claro walnut striker it is pretty mellow and excels at the soft stuff.  Not a high volume call, but really sweet rollover on the yelps.  It was purchased by a friend of a friend for her dad as a late Christmas gift.  I couldn't get a good picture of this one no matter what I tried.

I don't know about that!  Tru Oil's mighty easy!  But you know how much I love doing CA finishes.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Nice calls. I really like the Osage call. The tru oil looks awesome. I need to take a break from trying to CA my pots and work on using tru oil more. I would love to be able to lay a finish on that looks that good.

Great stuff KC! I wish I could get my tru-oil so shiny... I'm starting to think that I bought a matte bottle or something. I put 5 coats on an ornament a couple days ago but it wouldn't get shiny even after buffing with white diamond. Oh well, lots of people prefer it anyway ~Andre

Buff each coat with 0000 steel wool until it is dull boys, then re-coat using an old sock or t-shirt as an applicator.  Don't lay it on thick.  Wipe across the grain, then in the direction of the grain.  Don't steel wool the final coat.  Easy as pie.

Aaron, your call's have the cleanest lines, and not a single flaw. I love the way your strikers flow.
