Maple with My Mud Camo Finish
« on: September 16, 2008, 12:33:50 AM »
These are part of the barrels that I posted yesterday.  Finished with poly and then a buff and wax job.   Only have a few more of these and then I can get back to having fun with the predator calls.

Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

How can you tell if the poly is dry/hard enough to polish. I've thought about doing that, but never wanted to find out the hard way the finish wasn't hard enough yet. Short of waiting weeks, is there a non destructive way to gauge it ?

The poly is considered dry/cured if you cannot smell it.  Just don't try to melt it when you buff it, you are buffing the call finish not trying to heat it up and cook it.

Thanks Marvin.  Do you start with Tripoli or go straight to the white diamond?
It's so humid around here I sometimes have to bring calls in the house to get them to complety dry.  Of course, with no power in the shop, no 220 and no AC in the house, it's sort of irrelevant right now :-\ I can't wait to get back to turning, I'm having wood withdrawle symptoms. The good news is there are wood stumps on every sidewalk of every house for 50 miles around me. Loading up on Ash, Pecan, Hackberry (sugar berry), and a bit of birch. Going to have to master the art of spalting, ought to make for some fine turning stock.

Start at the bottom with tripoli then white diamond.  On dark woods like walnut you might want to skip the white diamond, it tends to leave white specks in the pores of the wood.
