Got my parts now they are calls?????
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:59:00 PM »
These are slate over glass.  I used plumbers goop to glue in.  Thanks to everyone here that has posted a picture of a how to tip.  THANK YOU!!!

Walnuthead with walnut dowel is my favorite it has the best sound at least to me.  Since I have been called a turkey many times my opinion should count for something.

Strikers from left to right - Cherry/Walnut pitch is way, way low sounds like an old turkey that smoked for 20 years.  Macasser ebony/Walnut, Mcasser ebony/Purpleheart,  Walnut/Walnut, Mcasser ebony/walmut, Mcasser ebony/Purpleheart,  Osage orange/Purpleheart

IMHO walnut had the best tone purpleheart with a small head can get very high pitched if you have a very heavy hand.  Hickory was almost always lower than I like
Appreciate you looking and reading my drivel.

Nice looking calls Bill. I really like the strikers. I have no idea how to use that type of call but they sure are pretty.

Those are really nice looking calls. As has been said elsewhere, you're the maker, so make them the way they sound the best to you. Then you hope the customer likes what you did. If not, well, they can buy someplace else.

Yep, that, afterall, is the true test. Doesn't matter what you or I or anyone else think of the sound, if the turkeys like it, you got a good one!

How'd Grampa say it...."Right on the button". But remember, turkeys are funny too. I once had a jake come running in to the sound of the chevy truck horn. Go figure....LOL

Great looking calls and strikers!  If the strikers are giving you a different pitched sound than you would like, I'd play with making the length of the bell of the strikers longer.  You can also play with the diameter of the dowel on the striker, and the total length.  Just some things to think about if you're wanting to get other sounds out of other woods.

What size drill bit did you use on that Cherry/Walnut turkey smokin' one?  I like the low tones myself and haven't got a striker yet to sound like anything other than a Pre-pubescent boy.

The cherry started off 1 1/4 X 2 1/2.  There is 1" of 3/8" dowel glued in with CA. The end is a 1/8" bead.  The inside is tapered down to as close to the end of the dowel as i could get.  Used a tool made from a screw driver to get inside.  I would give better dimensions but someone purchased the strike and I don't keep the notes i should.  I should know better because i suffer from CRS.
