I got this wood from a friend in Mississippi he sent it to me to try out on a call.
This call is headed back to the gent that sent me the peaces.
It was a fence post he didn't know how long but its way old.
It has 40 or more growth rings..Turned like butter but hard as a rock..

Looks like hedge, but not quite...maybe persimmon?  Not sure what they make fenceposts from in arkansas besides hedge?
Looks like it finished really well!  And that crow skull is pretty slick. :2up:

Man I was just a little too late! I knew what it was but someone beat me to it.  :stickman1:

I turned a couple pens out of a tobacco stick last year for a lady. She got the sticks from her grandfathers farm and they turned out just like this. She was real happy with them too.

  I'll PM you my address!!!!

 :funny:

I thought it looked a little familiar. I picked some up off a construction site here once & turned it round just for fun. I do like the looks of that wood & think it makes a very nice hardwood floor material.

Gotta disagree with you HaMeR. Not on how great it looks as a floor, but on it's use as a floor. I have it in my cabin and it is way, way too soft to ever be used as a flooring material. Heck, I pulled my refrigerator out the other day and it left wheel marks in my flooring. Dang, it's so pretty too.

But I do have to agree with you on how great looking that call is. Nice job JThomas.

Really Braz? The Yellow Pine I've been around here,, construction sites that is,, is very hard. I thought it would make a good flooring material. I know it's still pine but dayum the stuff I messed around with was hard. Lesson learned on my end. Thank You!!

But it still makes a nice looking call.

I built a house about 10 years ago and the home owner specified that he wanted southern yellow pine flooring used on the front porch which is exposed to the elements. We got it order in and laid it for him and boy that stuff was hard. I wondered about it's durability being exposed though. Long story short I ran into the guy last spring and asked him about it and he said it is holding up great. To help preserve it after it weathered a year he mopped it down with BLO and reapplies it every other year.

I am a carpenter up here in Vermont and we use southern yellow pine for all of our interior stair treads. The stuff is hard as a rock and looks great painted or polyurethaned and allowed to age.  It will take on a deeper red orange in a few years. I actually have a few cut offs from the last staircase we did I just haven't had time to turn any yet
